I passed by this tropical palm often for several months. It was close to where I was living at the time. Its evolution was slow, with only tiny perceptible differences from day to day.

This quality was part of why my eye and lens were attracted to it. I also loved the way it danced in the gentle morning breeze. The way it reflected the subtle differences in light always brought a smile

It was growing in a small raised bed next to a wall along the sidewalk. I always had the feeling it was happy there. Especially in the soft morning light. Every time I see this image I am reminded of the joy this playful palm tree brought to me.

This sculptural weed grew in the walled courtyard of my home, a block from the palm above. It sprouted in the early rainy season of my first summer in Oaxaca.

I paid close attention to its daily growth, as I walked by several times each day. Just like the age old cliche, “it grew like a weed.”

I made this image when it was over four feet tall. I was fascinated by its sculptural leaves…
