In The Long Linage Of Fine Art Photographers, He Holds A Special Place In My Heart

I am still feeling the affects of yesterday’s visit to Centro Fotografico — Alvarez Bravo.

I have spent much of today thinking about the history of photography. Especially, Fine Art Photography and the greats of this genre. So many names come to mind.

Like Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Imogene Cunningham, and especially today, Minor White.

It was Minor White who introduced the mystic to fine art photography. He often acknowledged the role that spirit played in his work. His work was guided always, by a variety of spiritual and intellectual philosophies.

I will introduce him by sharing a number of quotes that touch me always. Quotes that inspire me daily, as I walk the streets of Oaxaca with my camera.

Often while traveling with a camera we arrive just as the sun slips over the horizon of a moment, too late to expose film, only time enough to expose our hearts.

No matter how slow the film, Spirit always stands still long enough for the photographer It has chosen.

One should not only photograph things for what they are but for what else they are.
