I don't know if I have mentioned this to you? I only shoot JPEG's. And I do all my editing in Snapseed. I start with the 'Tune Image' tool. After I desaturate and fine tune contrast, highlights, and shadows, I go to the "Tonal Contrast' tool. It allows adjustment of High Tones, Mid Tones, and Low Tones. The standard presets are +30, +50, +30, respectively. I rarely change these. I also will often apply this tool two or three times. I can only say it adds a lot of punch and detail. Sorta like magic.

Anyway, that's my secret. Try it you might like it! I will admit it almost seems like cheating:)
