I Will Offer You Some Views and History of This Vibrant City

This building is a half block from home. I pass by it nearly everyday. It has been condemned, though there are no signs of any changes in the works. The roof has collapsed and grass is growing above the left door.

This is one of the more extreme examples to be found in Oaxaca Centro, though it easy to find many others in similar, dilapidated condition. It is also one of my favorites.

This scene is about six blocks beyond the first photo. This woman can be found most early mornings in this spot. I’m sure a family member drops her off and helps unload the vegetables. A couple of hours later they will pick her up. Then her real job of cooking, cleaning, washing clothes, and of course caring for children and grandparents begins.

Behind the two pairs of doors is a fabulous French bakery, Boulenc, the only one in town. Customers start lining up on the sidewalk at least thirty minutes before they open the doors. The line continues throughout the day. Their breads and pastries are that good. Their clientele are an equal mix of locals and tourists.
