Palm Still Life On The Street
The Street Is Full Of Stories, When One Looks With Their Heart
Upon seeing this collection of dry palm parts strewn along the street, my first thought went to Memento Mori. The transience of life was lying in front of me. There was no mistaking it.
My second thought was, this is Art. Even in death these palm pieces were offering themselves as Art. Yes Art, with a capital, A.
Perhaps Oaxaca, and Mexico, are settling into my bones, into my consciousness. A culture that honors and celebrates, both death, and their departed loved ones.
The annual Day of Dead is fast approaching. The celebrations begin on November 1st, and continue through the 2nd. It is not to be confused with America’s Trick or Treat celebrations. They are two very separate occasions, with very different meanings.
I see making photographs of these palm pieces as a way honoring, and celebrating, the beauty they left behind in their death. That they are…
