Oaxaca’s Earthquake History Written On The Street

This View Caught My Attention In A Big Way

I had walked along this sidewalk several times before the geological reality of this view truly sunk into my awareness. I mean this is some serious earth upheaval going on.

I will admit right off, this photo is not my best camera work. This is not an easy place to get a pretty picture. The pretty pictures are below.

The sloping rock wall is right on the sidewalk. The sidewalk is next to the busiest four lanes of traffic in Oaxaca. During a short lull in the traffic flow I moved to the center median. Then I waited for another cycle of traffic to whiz by before snapping this pic.

But it is this view that shows the reality of what’s going on here. Slanting rock wall, sidewalk below, building floor above, and that crazy brick patchwork in the upper right corner. This view is three blocks from where I am living.

Now I don’t remember a lot of my college geology course, but I do know this is not the way rock layers normally stack up. This part of Mexico isn’t known for normal geology. It is known for earthquakes, and serious…
