Every Sunday is different in Oaxaca. Often there is bright sunshine and exciting events going on with great celebration. This morning began cool, with thick cloud cover. Rain was in the forecast.

This is the upper face of Santo Domingo. The recent rains have dampened the Cantera stone, showing the variety of natural tones occuring in this local volcanic rock. The cloudy sky helps reveal the elaborate reliefs, sculpted figures, and twin bell towers.

The original church and monastery was founded by the Dominican Order. Construction began in 1575. It remains a prized piece of Oaxaca history.

Basilica Soledad is about a mile away, still in the Centro District of Oaxaca. This church was built between 1682 and 1690, more than 100 years after construction of Santo Domingo began.

This sanctuary is dedicated to the Virgen de la Soledad, who is the Patron Saint of the City of Oaxaca. The grounds occupy a very large square city block, and includes the large plaza in the next photo.
