My Life in Photography Began Here

I began using the camera with intent in 1974. I’ve never looked back.

This is where it all began. The first assembled still life I made, in 1974. That was some 48 years ago now.

Still Life continues to be one of my favorite genres of photography. The thrill of planning, arranging, and photographing these subjects makes my heart sing.

In 1974 I was 22 years old. I was also reading Edward Weston’s “Day Books.” I was smitten. His influence continues to this day. He is one of my heroes. The opening image in this story is my homage to this man.

I had also recently purchased a new, Mamiya C-220 medium format camera. This creative tool began my lifelong love affair with photography. The image above was made with this camera. I followed my heart then. I still do.

In 1978 I moved to Eugene, Oregon to study photography at the University of Oregon. I was fortunate to have a few great instructors and mentors. I was also introduced to the large format view camera. It was the perfect tool for the still life work I wanted to pursue.
