Life On The Streets, Around This Famed Market, Starts Early

Benito Juarez, indigenous born in the Zapotec region, was one of the early presidents of Mexico. He served from 1858 until 1872. The largest Mercado in Oaxaca is named after him.

This Mercado, market, sells everything imaginable, from fresh produce, to flowers, to shoes and clothing. This market embraces the concept of . . . “If you can’t find it here, you probably don’t need it.”

The second largest public market is a block away. The Mercado 20 de Novembre. This companion market is a huge food court, with numerous cafes, and vendors selling everything from Mezcal to chocolate and baked goods.

Both markets are bustling with locals and visitors. Both are high energy visual treats, full of friendly vendors.

Activity around these markets starts before dawn, with the trash bags from yesterday being hauled out, and fresh wares and foods going in. Everyone participating in this activity is in high spirits, ready to begin the new day.
