Living With Five Giant Sunflowers
The First And Last Thing I Saw Every Day, Brought Great Joy
Four days after arriving in Xochimilco I stopped in a local cafe. I was near the end of my daily walk and was ready for a morning latte. It was a rather disappointing experience. I left in a bit of a huff, cursing under my breath.
Across from the cafe was a man and his young daughter selling flowers on the street. Hoping to shift my foul mood, I went to have a closer look.
He was a gentle man and obviously had a loving relationship with his daughter. The vibe between them quickly restored my faith in humanity, and my new neighborhood.
They had a lovely variety of flowers in buckets of water. I slowly looked at all of them. It was the giant sunflowers that captured my heart, instantly. The long stalks were tied with strips of palm leaf. That might have been the detail that made up my mind.
When I asked him the price, he told me 85 pesos. I quickly calculated the exchange realizing, he was asking $4.25 for five giant sunflowers! My heart did a little flip.
I nodded yes, and handed him a 100 peso bill. He started to dig in his pocket…
