Five More Days Before Moving To Barrio de Xochimilco

In preparation for my upcoming move to Barrio de Xochimilco, I have been exploring this ancient neighborhood every week or so. Each time I visit, I discover more of the visual delights that await me.

The Xochimilco Aqueduct is the historic center piece of this small, village like, neighborhood on the northern edge of Oaxaca de Juarez.

The Xochimilco Aqueduct was built in the 18th Century of the locally quarried Cantera Stone. This same stone is used in the cathedrals, office buildings, fountains, plazas, streets, and sidewalks of Oaxaca City. One can literally, not throw a stone in Oaxaca, without it hitting Cantera Stone!

This view is from the neighborhood main street, Calle Jose Lopez Alvarez. This is actually one of the shorter street names found in Oaxaca City.

The north face of the aqueduct features these triangular shapes that helped guide the once flowing waters. The creative geometry has a rhythm all its own. Photo opportunities abound!

There is a long trail that follows the dry river above this view. I look forward to exploring…
