Celebration And Rainy Season Coexist
It’s All About Plastic, And Lots Of It
Oaxaca is a warm, subtropical highland. The elevation is 5100 feet. It is warm year around, just a few degrees warmer than Mexico City. Low temperatures in January can drop into the mid 40’s. Summer highs reach the upper 80's.
I have written before, that life in Oaxaca is lived on the street. Much of life here is lived outdoors. Oaxaca also has a rainy season. This rainy season is nearly eight months long, from late March through mid November.
During these months, rain is in the forecast nearly every day. Though it does not always arrive. The weatherman likes to keep everyone on their toes.
With much of life lived outdoors, and the threat of rain lasting two thirds of the year, Oaxaca has learned to cover up. This is true whether it’s to cover from the rain, or cover from the bright, warm sunshine. Both require protection.
One of the things I have noticed is, there is a significant industry that does nothing but erect and remove these weather covers. First a structure of steel posts and trusses is set up and anchored by huge ropes. They are tied to trees, and to large eye…
