Making portraits of plants has many advantages. They never flinch when my lens gets too close. They are never shy. They never frown. And best of all, they are not required to wear those silly masks.

They don’t insist on having their “good” side shown. For them, every side is their good side, thorns, warts, and all. And they are remarkably good at holding still.

No matter where I walk in this city, there are plants showing their best faces. It’s like they were waiting for me to make their portrait. After I do they often whisper, “Come back any time, we love having our picture taken.”

In all my years making portraits, I have rarely heard that before. And the best part is, they were serious about their offer. Which is why I always come back to visit them again. In every season they wear a different outfit.
