Before Oaxaca, There Was Santa Fe

And Several Years Of Solitude, Still Life, And Self Portraits

In the Spring of 2018 I spent four months living a block from the beach in Tijuana, Mexico. It was a quiet and restful time after fifteen months of nonstop world travel. It was a peaceful time of considering my next move.

Before leaving Santa Fe to travel, I had lived in this magical 400 year old community for ten years. I have many fond memories of my time there.

In early June I emailed an old friend in Santa Fe to check in and see how life was going with her. To my shock and surprise she told me she was recovering from a bout with cancer.

When I left Santa Fe at the beginning of 2017, she was deep in the throes of remodeling a home she had purchased twenty minutes south of Santa Fe. It was a busy and stressful time for her.

Over the course of several emails, I offered to return to Santa Fe and help finish up the remodeling. I had done a lot of this kind of work in the past.

By the time I had completed this work and was getting ready to move to Oaxaca, Covid arrived. This obviously changed everything. I ended up staying south of Santa Fe two more years.
