My Three And A Half Mile Loop Revealed A Different Reality This Morning

I had a long look at Google Maps before I stepped through the gate this morning. I wanted to stretch my legs and experience new views. I wanted to see another side of my beloved Oaxaca.

It is too often easy to follow familiar paths through this visually stimulating city. This morning I challenged myself to venture where I had not been before. I was rewarded with new horizons, as well as different views of reality.

Oaxaca de Juarez, the name of this wide ranging city, is so much more than Oaxaca Centro. I have explored the Centro district thoroughly, and have written often of it here.

Barrio de Xochimilco, where I currently live, is just across a four lane road from Centro. They are much more alike than different. Xochimilco is just older.

I have discovered that age is no indication of prosperity. I see many more BMW SUV’s here, than I ever did in Centro. The homes may be older, but many have been thoroughly remodeled and updated. I have discovered that Xochimilco is a fashionable place for the old money of Oaxaca to reside.
